Three Christmas Motets:
(2020)
O Magnum Mysterium - SSAATTBB
Lux Fulgébit - SSAATTBB + optional marimba
Veni, Veni O Oriens (O Radiant Dawn) - for double choir + soprano saxophone
O Magnum Mysterium is a text from the Holy Matins of Christmas describing the wonderment of the animals as they gaze on Christ: "O great mystery and wonderful sacrament, that animals should see the newborn Lord, lying in a manger." Based on the Responsorial Gregorian Chant from the Matins of Christmas, this anthem is dedicated to our dear friends Grace & Alex Hampson and their beautiful daughter, Olive, who was born in 2019. “Lux fulgebit” is from the first line of the proper texts for the Christmas Mass at Dawn. The Introit for the Mass begins with “Lux fulgebit hodie super nos” (“A light shall shine upon us this day”), a line from Isaiah’s prophecy of the coming of the Messiah. This is the culmination of the imagery that pervades Advent (the four weeks preceding Christmas), which depicts the world in darkness, longing for the dawn, and repeatedly figures the birth of Jesus as the light in the East. Veni, Veni O Oriens was written for saxophonist Finn McEwen and friends and in memory of those who lost their lives during the 2020 pandemic. On the theme of dawn, the text from the Great 'O' Antiphons, the Advent hymn, 'O Come, O Come, Emmanuel' and Isaiah 9:1.

A Red, Red Rose
(2017)
For SATB & Organ
'A Red, Red Rose' is a love poem written by Robert Burns based on a folk version of a song he heard on his travels. Burns completed the poem in 1794 in an English dialect called Scots for publication in collections of traditional Scottish Ballads. Burns himself chose a melody by the Scottish fiddler Niel Now entitled, 'Major Graham's Strathspey', which appeared in Gow's A collection of Strathspeys and Reels (1784). This melody features during the baritone solo in this setting of the poem, whilst exploring mixolydian, lydian, phrygian, aeolian and ionian modes.
Written for my dear Kate on our Wedding Day. First performed in Norwich Cathedral on Saturday 18th August 2018.

Cantate Domino
(2016)
For SATB, Organ, Harp & Percussion
(Sloane Square Choral Society Composition Competition 2016 winning entry)
Psalm 96 is an inspirational text that has often been set to music by composers. Written for SATB, Organ, Harp and Percussion, ‘Cantate Domino’ is a celebratory work intended for festal Church services or for the concert platform. The material for this work is derived from the melody of the ‘O Antiphons’ used at Vespers during the last seven days of Advent. The words ‘Sing unto the Lord a new song’ open the piece in unison, making use of the original plainsong for Psalm 96. Although different time signatures help to denote the length of sung syllables, the intention here is for the text to follow the natural rhythms of speech. The introductory flourishes on the organ create a rhythmic triplet motif, which return throughout the composition as brief interludes in different keys to link the contrasting music of the verses; the music and structure is always guided by the text. The coda employs canon and imitation between voices and is dominated by shifting time signatures of alternating and metres, reminiscent of Bernstein’s lively ‘America’ from his renowned West Side Story. Andrew is grateful to Sloane Square Choral Society and The De Laszlo Foundation for its commitment to the promotion of the arts.

The Locomotive - Rajhani Express (2016)
An accessible work for Percussion Ensemble.
This piece draws on minimalist influences with driving rhythms and introduces the use of contrasting time signatures for young percussion students. The melody of the North Indian 'Kaylan' Rag is used, and the work attempts to express the clanging and clanking of a sleeper train, first slow and accelerating, next in full motion, then braking, and finally decelerating to stand still.
